Indian Lilac

The most effective herbal remedy for bed bugs is Indian Lilac. The leaves of Indian lilac are extremely bitter in taste and release chemicals that are effective in killing the micro-organisms and their eggs.

Indian Lilac is also known as Neem and is found growing mainly in India and other Asian countries. Take 300 grams of the lilac leaves and wash them thoroughly. Put the leaves in a liter of boiling water and boil them for 15-20 minutes. Let the water cool down and then discard the leaves. In this water add half a liter of very hot water and soak your infected clothes in this for an hour. Do not add detergent. After an hour transfer the clothes into a bucket of hot water into which very strong detergent has been added.

Soak the clothes again for 15 minutes and then wash as usual. Squeeze the clothes or put them in the dryer. Hang the clothes only in the sun. The heat from the sun is very effective in eliminating the bed bugs as well as their eggs. This treatment should be done for all clothes, linen, soft toys and upholstery in the house. Do this treatment every alternate for two weeks.

Bathing with neem water twice a day will ensure that bed bugs do not infest your body. Taking neem water bath at night will also help you sleep peacefully if your bed is under bug attack! To protect your home from bed bugs prepare pouches that contain dried neem leaves. Place these pouches in your cupboards, shelves, boxes and even under the mattresses. The pouches can also be inserted into the sides of the sofas and cushions.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial properties that make it very effective in the treatment of bed bugs. The essential oil is a little expensive but it will ensure that you never suffer from the problems of bed bugs again.

Add 300ml of tea tree essential oil to a bucket of very hot water. Soak your clothes in this water for 40-60 minutes. Wash the clothes as usual with a very strong detergent. For last rinse put 50ml of tea tree oil in hot water. Soak the clothes in this water for 10 minutes. Squeeze the clothes with hands and dry them under very hot sun. Do this treatment for all clothes, curtains, soft toys as well as bed sheets. This treatment should be done every day for a week.

Pour tea tree oil in your bucket of warm water and bathe with this water to eliminate the bugs from your body. Take a spray bottle and pour the essential oil in the bottle. Spray the oil onto your sofas and cushions to kill the remaining bed bugs. Do this twice a day for three days.


Like tea tree oil, garlic too has antifungal properties that make it beneficial in the treatment of bed bugs. Take the needed quantity of garlic and peel it properly. Crush the pods lightly. Place the pods in medicated gauze and tie a knot securing the pods well. Prepare 20-30 such pouches and place them in all nooks and corners of your home. Don’t forget to place the pouches in between the sofa spaces, under the sofa cushions, in cupboards and under your mattresses.

Keep the garlic pouches for 24 hours and then replace them with fresh garlic pouches. Do this daily for 7-10 days to get rid of the bed bugs completely. Thereafter, do this treatment once a week to ensure that your house remains bug free for always.

Don’t try to diffuse the smell of garlic with air sprays and room fresheners. Simply leave the doors and windows open to eliminate the pungent smell of garlic from your home. Don’t worry too much about the smell as you will get used to it soon. Besides, it is important in order to get rid of the bed bugs.
