Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common but serious ailment. It is commonly known as high BP. On a serious note it is also called ‘silent killer’, because it may not have any symptoms to announce its presence and may go unnoticed for quite sometime. High blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the job of the heart difficult by making it work harder to pump the blood. This can lead to failure of the heart.

There may not be any outward symptoms of hypertension for years. When the symptoms manifest they can be headaches, dizziness, breathing problems, pain, palpitations and edema.
Types of Hypertension
There are two types of hypertension, the primary hypertension which is the most prevalent type and the secondary hypertension which is usually curable because the underlying reasons for this are reversible.
Home Remedies For Hypertension
This is the simplest home remedy for hypertension. Take just one clove of garlic , chew it and gulp it down with water. You have to take it on an empty stomach. There is one interesting and appealing way to eat garlic: take a few raisins, crush them a little, fold inside this crushed paste a crushed garlic clove.
Now you can swallow it with water, without letting garlic touch your mouth. Nobody likes the strong smell of garlic in the mouth, especially at the start of the day.
Carrots have high potassium content, which is known to reduce high blood pressure. Eating carrots every day is a good idea. Potassium works by blocking the absorption of sodium. Sodium is a constituent of salt; the chemical name of salt is sodium chloride.
Make fennel (saunf), basil (tulasi), black pepper (kali mirch) a part of your every day diet to get relief in high blood pressure. You can eat them raw or add to your food.
Like carrots papaya is also a good source of potassium, thus helps in reducing the elevated blood pressure. One can eat it as a fruit. Even raw papaya can be eaten as a salad, it is very tasty. Grate it add grated raw mango, add salt and red chili powder.
Fresh Gooseberry (amla) Juice
Check for the season when fresh amla is available in the market, those few months you must make a good use of them. All you need is just 1 tbsp of amla juice mix half a tbsp of honey and take it once a day .
Take the juice of half a lemon in a cup of water. You can drink it thrice a day to control your blood pressure.
Ayurveda lays emphasis on tapping the goodness of poppy seeds (khas khas) and watermelon seeds. They are very good for high blood pressure. Take 50 g of khas khas and 50 g watermelon seeds. Grind them into a powder. Every morning and evening when the stomach is empty, take 1 tsp of this powder. They are very beneficial for your general health.
Diet and Lifestyle
Diet and lifestyle changes play a very important role in arresting blood pressure and bringing it down to the desired levels. But it is easier said than done, especially because there may not be any symptoms. In such cases, equip yourself with knowledge about the potential dangers of hypertension. That only can act as a motivational factor. Do not lower your guards at any cost, only you can take responsibility of your health, nobody else can do it for you.
Foods for Hypertension
Diet can do a lot in controlling high blood pressure, even if you have been taking medicines and are using the home remedies as well. The importance of diet remains a very crucial factor in arresting hypertension.
The ideal diet for hypertension is the vegetables, fruits, whole grain cereals. Red meat consumption has to be reduced, instead eat poultry and fish. Processed foods have to be shunted out from your menu completely. The diet should have high amounts of potassium, magnesium and calcium. Bananas and raisins are good to eat. Butter, cheese and saturated fats need to be reduced.
This is the first information that a high BP patient gets from the doctor as well from all the well wishers. Stopping the salt completely and suddenly is not a practical idea, reduce it gradually, because old habits die hard. Make a sustained effort and you will be able to bring down your salt intake to 1.5 g per day. Avoid Sedentary Life
You need to do walking and exercises at least for 30 minutes in a day. Choose whatever you like.
Keep your body weight in check. To keep your blood pressure at correct levels, the body weight should be brought down if it is more. You can see the reduction in hypertension, even when you reduce it by 3 to 4 kg.
One needs a good night’s sleep. Sleep at night, respect the time that goes with the cycle of the sun. Sleep well in time to get up early in the morning. A lot of damage t the health is done by wrong sleeping habits. This will bring you blood pressure down to some extent.
Some Other Tips to Manage Hypertension
Hypertension is best managed with a combination of exercises, yoga, stress management, diet changes and some home remedies.
The drinks that can help are: coconut water, black tea, hibiscus tea and watermelon extract.
