Cold sores or fever blisters are not only painful but ugly to look at too. The corner of my lips and the inside of my mouth are two places where one invariably gets these fever blisters. Though these blister usually happen in a cluster inside the mouth, previously you have also experiences these blisters on my chin and nose area too.
When you are unwell and your immune system is weakened, or even when you are stressed out is the time when these blisters are seen to appear on my skin.
Causes of Fever Blisters
People with other illnesses and a weak immune system can be seriously affected with HSV-1 virus. Those under some medicinal treatment can also be affected with this virus. The virus is usually dormant or inactive in the facial nerves during its initial attack.
The virus may become active at regular intervals in case of some people affected by them and it is under these circumstances that the fever blisters are seen to occur on the skin.
Symptoms of Fever Blisters
Fever blisters are painful blisters that are small and semi-fluid in nature and are seen to occur on the lips, gums, nose, or top of the mouth. Before the fever blisters erupt one can experience pain, a tingling, burning or itching sensation on the skin area which is some of the first symptoms of cold sores that people experience.
A swelling and redness on the skin are next noticed. One or more small fever blisters start appearing on the skin within 24 hours of experiencing these symptoms. Once these blisters erupt they emerge as painful cold sores which get covered by scab like crusts. As the sores heal, the crusts will keep falling off and forming again.
Home Remedies For Fever Blisters
Lemon Balm Tea for Soothing
Lemon balm tea is definitely one of my favorite of remedies to treat fever blisters. Blistered skins are smoothened and relieved of pain and discomfort with lemon balm tea. Take a hot cup of tea and mix it with a tablespoon of manuka honey to prepare your lemon balm tea treatment.
Then, just enjoy sipping on to this immunity boosting drink to treat your fever blisters. While I sip the tea I also prefer to dip a cotton ball into the drink and place it right over my fever blisters. This helps to soothe, cleanse and treat them from outside.
Treating Fever Blisters with Vitamin E
Vitamin E oil is another remedy that I prefer to use like lemon balm tea for treating my fever blisters. I take a cotton swab and dip it in pure Vitamin E oil and apply it directly on the fever blisters to aid in their healing.
Fever blisters can often leave behind scaring which can be prevented with the application of Vitamin E oil. I have found this treatment to be affective from my own experience of using it to treat my fever blisters.
Preventing and Healing With Eggs and Yogurt
Apart from treating my blisters with lemon balm with manuka honey and vitamin E, an egg and yogurt facial mask has also worked for me in the treatment of fever blisters. All you need to do is apply this mask on the fever blisters and your entire face like a face pack. Not only is this pack soothing but it also heals the blisters. This mask can be made by simply combining an egg with a cup of yogurt and a tablespoon of manuka honey in a small bowl and mixing it till it forms a thick creamy consistency.
The facial pack is now ready for application. Application of this mask to your skin and fever blisters must be done in proper even layers and left to dry for half an hour. It can then be washed off with warm water and patting on your face to dry it. You will notice lesser redness and a soothing feeling on your fever blisters once you have used this egg and yogurt mask.
Tea Bags to Treat Fever Blisters
Tannic acid, an astringent that has antiviral properties is present in tea bags, making it effective as an over-the-counter fever blister treatment remedy. The quantity of virus created is reduced considerably while the fever blister pain is made numb with ice through this treatment procedure.
Diet for Fever Blister Patients
High quantities of lysine-rich fruits and foods that include milk, eggs, chicken, lima beans, soy, fish, potatoes, etc.) can prevent an outbreak of fever blisters. Arginine-rich foods like raisins and even nuts, along with chocolate and gelatin should not be taken much as they aggravate the problem.
Other Treatments for Fever Blisters
Amongst the other treatment procedures followed for fever blister treatment, grapefruit seed extract remedy deserves mention. This is done by mixing a few drops of aloe with grapefruit and applying it on the blisters. Another treatment that can be tried out to treat fever blisters is with black tea.
Prepare black tea with a tea bag as usual and apply the bag on the cold sore. Repeat this for a few days and you will find that the blisters have disappeared in no time. You can also try the rhubarb and sage cream treatment. This is as effective as topical acyclovir cream but is more effective due to the combination of rhubarb and sage cream.
