Cold in toddlers is usually a symptom of infection caused as a result of change in weather, eating cold foods, drinking cold drinks or due to allergens. Not many toddlers take too well to the synthetic medications available OTC mainly because of their taste or because their bodies may not respond well to the barrage of chemicals inflicted upon them. There are some excellent herbs that can treat cold in toddlers effectively and without causing any side effects like drowsiness etc.
Herbal Remedies For Toddler Cold
Ginger is beneficial for curing cold and symptoms of common cold because of its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Prepare ginger herbal tea by boiling two teaspoons of grated ginger in 300 ml of water for 20 minutes on medium flame. Strain the water and discard the boiled ginger.
Add two teaspoon of honey to the water and make your toddler sip this at intervals during the first half of the day. Prepare a fresh batch of ginger tea for the second half. Continue the treatment for the next three days to cure the cold completely. The sweet taste of honey will ensure that your toddler drinks the tea happily.
Lemon And Honey
The combination of lemon and honey is also considered good and safe for treating cold in toddlers. Lemon has vitamin C that fights the infection causing bacteria and honey moisturizes the irritated and dry patches of the throat. In 200 ml of warm water add half teaspoon lemon and half teaspoon honey.
Mix well and make your toddler drink this herbal concoction in one go. Give 3-4 glasses of lemon-honey water daily to your toddler for the next four days. Ensure that the water is warm and not hot nor at normal temperature.
Eucalyptus is a favourite herb used in the preparation of decongestant balms. The herb has properties that melt the accumulated mucus in the chest and in the nasal passages. It is this mucus that is responsible for the frequent bouts of coughing and a runny nose. Eucalyptus decongestant balms are widely available in drug stores but you can also use the herbal oil for rubbing it on the throat, the chest and the back of your child. Do this 3-4 times every day.
The medicinal properties of this aromatic herb have been well exploited over the ages. The herb is normally used for treating whopping cough in toddlers and bronchitis in adults. The active compounds in the herb reduce the inflammation and mucus congestion in the chest thereby treating cold. Thyme is combined with cowslip for treating cold in toddlers. You will find the thyme-cowslip cough syrup in many herbal drug stores. Use the medication per the instructions on the bottle.
Black pepper is a hot herbal spice that is used for adding the spicy taste to various dishes. The herb is less spicy than cayenne pepper but is spicy none the less. Black pepper is used during common cold and cough because the ‘heat’ in the spice effectively melts the mucus congesting the chest and lungs. In a teaspoon of grated ginger add two pinches black pepper and one tablespoon honey. Warm the mixture for 10 seconds in microwave and give it to your toddler 5-6 times during the day.
