Cough is not a life threatening condition but if left untreated it can result in shortness of breath. People suffering from cough find the condition very irritating as it interferes in their communication with other people. Besides, the cough also causes pain in the throat making it difficult to swallow.
Medically, cough is not treated as a disease but rather as a condition since it is helps the body get rid of any foreign particles lodged in the lungs and in the air pipe. Bouts of coughing are normally triggered by diseases such as flu and common cold. Coughing is also common during TB, asthma and acidity. In some cases, excessive smoking or being exposed to smoke from cigarettes can cause coughing.
Do not ignore your cough if it continues for more than two weeks or if it returns after a lapse of a week. Get a medical opinion on your condition.
