Ringworm is a medical condition of the skin that results in the formation of ring-like patches all over the skin. These patches can be circular or oval in shape along with being red in color. They usually have a clean centre that makes them resemble a ring. Ringworms are a result of fungal infection. The fungus that causes the skin condition is actually a plant belonging to the lowest point in the plant hierarchy.
Ringworms are also commonly seen in animals. In fact the skin infection spreads from the animals to the humans. The condition leads to intense itching and burning sensation in the affected areas. Although ringworms are not life threatening but they need to be treated otherwise the infection never goes away and keeps recurring. This weakens the immune system considerably.
Effective and complete treatment of ringworms is possible using herbs. These herbs are easily available and therefore it is possible to start the treatment as soon as possible. Once you have recognized the symptoms of the condition do not waste any time in beginning the treatment.
6 Effective Herbal Treatment for Ringworms
Indian lilac (also known as ‘Neem’) has antifungal as well as anti-bacterial properties that make it very effective for treating various skin infections. To cure ringworms using this herb boil a put 500 grams of neem leaves in a liter of boiling water. Boil for 20 minutes. Strain the water and throw away the boiled leaves. Pour the treated water in a tub and take bath with this water. This bath should be taken three times during the day.
You must also apply crushed leaves of neem on the affected areas and leave on for 20 minutes. Doing this twice a day along with the neem water bath will fasten the process of healing. Continue the treatment for as long as you feel the symptoms and see the patches.
Basil leaves are generally used in cooking but not many people are aware that applying basil leaves to the skin can cure many skin infections including acne and ringworms.
Take 100 grams of basil. Remove the stems and wash the leaves under running water. Put the leaves in the jar of your electric mixer and grind them with a little water to make a smooth paste. Apply the basil paste all over the affected areas of the skin. Leave for 30 minutes and then wash off using cold water. The treatment should be done four times during the day until the infection completely disappears.
You can even use basil water for treating the infection. Boil 100 grams of basil in ½ liter of water for 20 minutes. Strain the water and discard the basil leaves. Allow the basil water to cool down or put it the refrigerator. Dip a clean cloth in the water and spread the cloth over the affected skin. This treatment will provide relief from itching and burning and also help with the treatment of the patches.
Mustard seeds are again used widely in preparing various dishes. Mustard oil is also very good for lowering cholesterol. However, mustard seeds are also known to treat infections of the skin and the scalp that are caused by fungus. Make paste of 250 grams of mustard seeds by mixing them with a little water. Spread the paste evenly on the skin and leave for 20 minutes. Clean the paste from the skin using a damp cloth. Repeat the treatment three times at least as it will help reduce itching, inflammation and the red patches.
Since ancient times turmeric is being used for treating skin infections caused by bacteria as well as fungi. Turmeric has amazing healing properties that ensure complete removal of the infection causing organisms from the skin. Many skin care products contain turmeric extracts. In many parts of India, women use turmeric as part of their daily skin care routine.
But turmeric sticks from any herbal store and grind the sticks to a fine powder form. Mix 100 grams of turmeric powder with rose water or cucumber water to make a paste of spreadable consistency. Apply an even layer of the paste over the ringworm infected areas of the skin. Leave on for 30 minutes and then wipe using a damp cloth. The treatment should be done 4-5 times during the day to effectively treat the red patches. You can even sleep with the turmeric on at night of you aren’t worried about staining your clothes and the bed sheets.
The seeds of Butea are particularly used in the treatment of skin infections caused by fungus. Hence, it is very effective for curing ringworms. Grind 100 grams of the seeds to a fine powder form. Add rose water or tap water to the powder and make a paste.
Evenly spread the paste over the infected areas. Clean the paste after 30 minutes using plain water. Repeat the treatment 3 times daily to fasten the healing of the skin. Paste prepared using Butea seeds will treat the inflammation of the skin and also soothe the irritated skin providing relief from itching.
Raw papaya releases enzymes that act on the infection causing fungi and restrict their growth. Take a raw papaya and peel its skin. Crush the papaya in an electric mixer and apply it on the skin. If the papaya does not crush properly then add very little cold milk to it. Apply the raw papaya over the skin and leave on for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes remove the papaya paste and wash the skin with cold water. This treatment should be done at least twice during the day. Once your skin is infection-free continue using the treatment for the next couple of days as well. This will ensure that the infection doesn’t return.
