Red eyelids are often the result of allergies, infections, pollution, cold or a superficial injury. The redness of the eyes is mainly because of inflammation that results in pain and itching as well. Many people also suffer from partial loss of vision or temporary blindness due to the redness in eyelids. There are many OTC creams and antibiotics available for treating the cause of the redness in the eyelids but these medications can be expensive. You can try out good old natural remedies using herbs for treating the red eyelids.
Herbal Remedies For Red Eyelids
A poultice prepared using flax seeds works wonderfully well for treating red and puffy eyelids. Flax seed poultices are widely used in the treatment of eye infections including conjunctivitis because of its ability to bring down inflammation and to treat itching. Dry roast handful of flaxseeds until they turn brown in color.
Wrap them in cheesecloth and steep in 120ml of warm water for 15-20 minutes. Now apply this cheesecloth over the eyelids 3-4 times during the day. Ensure that the poultice isn’t very hot or you will burn your eyelids.
Celosia seed, also known as Celosia argentea, is a Chinese herb that works wonderfully well on puffy, red and sore eyes. In Chinese medicine the herb is called Qing Xiang Zi and is widely used for soothing irritation, inflammation and infection in the eyes.
Use celosia seed extract as eye drops and apply them to the eyes every four hours to treat red eyelids. Continue the treatment for 3-4 days or until the redness disappears completely.
Witch hazel is a medicinal herb with anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. These are very helpful in treating the swelling and redness in the eyes that could be due to infection, injury or an allergy. In a litre of water boil 30 grams of witch hazel leaves for 20 minutes.
Steep for another 10 minutes before straining the water and storing it in a spray bottle. Refrigerate the bottle and use the cool witch hazel water for spraying over closed eyes. Do this repeatedly and you will see a considerable effect.
Eyebright is a wonderful wild flower that is found growing in many kitchen gardens as well. The flower of the herb has been used in the treatment of many eye infections since ancient times. The herb will effectively soothe the eyes to bring down inflammation and redness.
Gather petals of four eyebright flowers and boil them in a cup of water for 10 minutes. Strain the mix and apply the cooled and treated water on the eyes using a clean cotton ball or muslin cloth. Do the treatment 5-7 times to fasten the process of healing.
Calendula And Marigold
Infusion prepared using calendula and marigold has been effective in treating inflammation and redness in the eyes because of the anti-inflammatory and mild astringent effects of the herbs. Take petals from four calendula and marigold flowers.
Place the petals in a bowl of very hot water (about 200 ml) and let them steep for 15 minutes. Strain the water and apply the infusion on the eyelids 7-10 times during the day.
