Herbs For Cholesterol

High cholesterol level is a problem with majority of people because of the unhealthy lifestyle that most of us have started leading in the recent years. The medical name for the condition is hyperlipidemia and is known to increase the risk of occurrence of various heart diseases as well as untimely strokes. The reason for high cholesterol is the increase in level of LDL cholesterol or the bad cholesterol that affects the lining within blood vessels leading to hardening and blockage of the arteries. Along with lowering the level of LDL it is also important to raise the level of HDL or the good cholesterol and there are many herbs that can help you do exactly this.

Artichoke Leaf Reduce Cholesterol

Artichoke or Cynara scolymnus has proven to be beneficial in lowering cholesterol levels. It is the extract of the artichoke leaf that is used for treating the condition as it lowers the production of LDL in the body. The presence of cynarin also helps stimulate production of large amounts of bile in the liver that fastens the outflow of bile from gall bladder thereby helping with the removal of cholesterol.

Garlic is a well known herbal treatment for lowering cholesterol and for balancing the level of HDL in the body. Garlic is high on organosulfur content and is known to contain more sulphur than even sulphur rich vegetables such as cauliflower, onion and broccoli. Regular intake of raw garlic also causes the clotted blood to thin out again thereby reducing the blockage of the arteries and lowering the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, like garlic, is also a popular herbal remedy for lowering cholesterol levels. Many people prefer chewing on fresh aloe vera gel first thing in the morning while others prefer drinking a glass of fresh aloe juice on empty stomach. Both the methods can help bring down the cholesterol level to an acceptable limit. If you find the taste of fresh aloe not to your liking then you can take herbal supplements of aloe vera.

Alfalfa Herb

Alfalfa is a well known herb but not many people are aware of its medicinal properties that block the arteries from absorbing the cholesterol and thereby avoiding atherosclerotic plaques. The herb is rich in fiber content that attaches itself to the harmful cholesterol and helps in its effective and complete removal from the body.

This also ensures that the cholesterol does not travel to the blood or the blood carrying vessels. A study showed that including alfalfa in your daily diet or by taking its supplements one can reduce the cholesterol level within four weeks itself.

Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds have alkaloids and lysine as compounds that are rich in protein. The herb also contains steroidal saponins that prevent the absorption of cholesterol and help in its break down so that it is easily removed from the body.

Medical studies have shown that fenugreek seeds effectively lower the LDL and triglyceride levels without causing a dip in the HDL or the good cholesterol levels. 15-20 grams of fenugreek seeds should be taken along with each meal to lower LDL.
